Mendon Conservation Commission Kicks Off Formal Wetlands Regulation Drafting with Outside Firm

Mendon Conservation Commission launches first comprehensive wetlands regulation effort in at least a decade. The commission held a nearly two-hour kickoff session with Beals and Thomas consultants Stacy Minahan, Andrew Gorman, and Jackie Boyer, working through topics including a proposed 1,000-square-foot minimum size threshold for isolated wetlands, stormwater facility jurisdiction tied to maintenance and operation plans, vernal pool buffer options, and dock permitting standards on Lake Nipmuc. Chair Bob Sweet said the goal was regulations "in line with what I call our peer communities," and the commission asked Beals and Thomas to prioritize a dock section for early review by the Lake Nipmuc Association.

Separately, the commission voted 4-1 to issue an enforcement order against a homeowner identified as Shane for tree cutting within the 25-foot no-disturb zone, superseding a prior permit and requiring a wetland delineation before any work resumes; and voted unanimously to issue a certificate of compliance for a stormwater detention basin project contingent on receipt of a final peer review payment to Blue Water.
