Mendon Capital Panel Sets Summer Budget Schedule After State Culvert Grant Denied

Capital Planning · Meeting of June 1, 2026

Mendon Capital Planning Committee maps summer schedule after MassDOT denies Providence Street culvert grant. The committee, chaired by member Phil Cieply, voted unanimously June 1 to recommend Michael Goddard for appointment to the Select Board and set a late-June target for its next substantive meeting ahead of a fall special town meeting. Town Administrator Jeremy reported that Mendon's application to the MassDOT small bridge repair program — which grew to a $1 million maximum this cycle — was denied because a required Chapter 85 hydrology review was not yet complete at the time of application, leaving the $2,050,000 bond authorization approved at town meeting as the project's only confirmed funding.

Jeremy said a new grant window opens in June and that he wants MassDOT's assessment of the town's candidacy before advising the Select Board whether to begin construction without confirmed grant funding, but stressed that "if we don't start by September 1st, we're not doing it in calendar year 2026." The committee also discussed a June 4 joint facilities meeting at which the Select Board, library trustees, and Council on Aging will begin weighing multi-million-dollar building needs for a new senior center and library improvements.
