Finance Panel Backs State Mediator For School Dispute

Finance Committee · Meeting of October 1, 2026

Templeton Finance Committee presses Select Board on school mediator, local aid after third override fails. The panel, which operates as the town's Advisory Committee, voted 5-0 to recommend the Select Board contact the Massachusetts Office of Public Collaboration to help resolve the unratified regional school agreement with Phillipston, with member Liz likening the standoff to "two divorced parents fighting about custody of a kid." Members also voted to recommend the Select Board advocate for state legislation restoring local aid, citing a Massachusetts Municipal Association report showing municipal revenue share has fallen to about 26 percent from roughly 38 percent in the 1980s. The town's stabilization fund has slipped to 6.82 percent of its operating budget, just above its 5 percent policy floor.

Member Erin warned of losing the fire department's ACLS ambulance certification after Templeton's third Proposition 2½ override failed on roughly 120 to 130 votes.
