BERLIN — June 2, 2026 — Berlin Board of Health grants septic permits and flags hazmat concerns near public water supply. The board unanimously approved a clean, variance-free septic system permit for a new unnumbered lot on Marlboro Road, featuring a 1,500-gallon tank, a 1,000-gallon pump chamber, and three 62-foot pipe-and-stone trenches, with no variances required. Health Agent Bill also confirmed a previously contingent permit for a barn septic at 26 Amos Wheeler Road after Conservation Commission chair AJ signed off on the design, which includes a 40-mil poly membrane and straw wattle erosion controls near a wetlands buffer zone. On three pending Zoning Board of Appeals applications, the board flagged the proximity of 132 Pleasant Street — a small engine repair operation — to the Northbrook 1 and 2 public water supply wells, calling for a hazardous-materials management plan; separately, the board noted a Three Gates Pond Road mixed-use application will require a two-compartment septic tank upgrade and decommissioning of an existing grease trap, nearly identical conditions the board had raised in a June 2025 memo to the ZBA. In administrative updates, security cameras installed with help from IT consultant Eric Von Gelding are now live at the transfer station, capable of capturing license plate numbers, with posted signage required by law arriving this week; a volunteer assistant program for the transfer station will open for applications July 1.
