Board of Health · Meeting of October 20, 2026

Berlin's Board of Health voted unanimously three times to approve Title 5 septic variances, including one for the historic 1870 Building, Lindsay House and First Parish Church cluster on Woodward Avenue. Health Agent William Brookings presented the plans, which separate a decades-old shared leach pit into independent systems for each property; Chair Paul D. Mikelk called it something that "should have been done 20 years ago for half the cost." The board also approved variances for a 119 Sawyer Hill Road accessory dwelling unit and a nearly 900-foot pump-fed sewer line on Randall Road, plus a two-bedroom ADU septic design at 224 Gates Pond Road requiring no variance. Separately, Mikelk reported the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection has grown "urgent" about the capped town landfill, with closure still two to two and a half years away and roughly $90,000 to $92,000 already appropriated toward testing.

The board also ordered a cesspool pump-out at 244 South Street by December 1 and opened a new occupancy violation at 136 Peach Hill.
