Millbury Finance Committee grills BVT on $650,000 in staff cuts and a new admissions lottery. Assistant Superintendent Dr. Matthew Connors told Chairperson Charles Cooper's committee that Blackstone Valley Tech's fiscal 2027 budget rose 2.5 percent even after eliminating about eight full-time positions to stay within that target, calling it "not a good scenario." Millbury's assessment falls to $1.355 million, down $180,966, reflecting 16 fewer students.
The town's new state-mandated lottery sets a minimum of 24 seats against a calculated target of roughly 93 students, with the drawing set for Thursday. Vice Chairperson William Pratt called the state's minimum-contribution formula unfair to "bedroom communities" like Millbury. The committee unanimously approved its March 18 minutes and adjourned at 7:30 p.m., both by 5-0 roll call.
