Finance Committee Approves September, October Minutes
The Paxton Finance Committee opened talks on weaning the town off its decade-long reliance on free cash to balance the operating budget.
Finance Committee · Meeting of October 28, 2026
PAXTON — The Paxton Finance Committee opened talks on weaning the town off its decade-long reliance on free cash to balance the operating budget. Members said free cash totaled $511,000 a year ago, down from $673,000 a couple of years earlier, and noted the town's capital depreciation fund held only $36,000 to $38,000. One member said "you can never have a surplus of free cash, so that's in air quotes," and the panel agreed future allocation needs input from the Select Board and the Capital Improvement Planning Committee before this year's figure is certified.
The committee unanimously approved minutes from its September 16 and October 21 meetings and discussed shifting to a Select Board style system of listing, rather than attaching, meeting materials. No votes were taken on budget policy or future meeting dates, both deferred pending the town administrator's schedule.
