Mendon Panel Approves Draft Noise By-Law
Mendon's General By-Law Review Committee approved a draft noise control by-law for the October 27 special town meeting warrant.
General By-Law Review Committee · Meeting of October 8, 2026
Mendon's General By-Law Review Committee approved a draft noise control by-law for the October 27 special town meeting warrant. Committee member Carl Hummel, who wrote the language after more than a year of talks with Police Chief Kersey and the town's Board of Health agent, said the measure would let officers issue civil citations instead of criminal disorderly-conduct charges. The draft sets a verbal warning for a first offense, a $100 fine for a second, and $300 for a third or later offense, and applies "the greater of" a flat 50-decibel limit or 5 decibels above ambient background noise, stricter than the state's 10-decibel standard.
Hummel said, "That's the big impact of having a by-law." The committee rejected a religious exemption for bells and chimes and approved by consensus to send the finalized draft to the town clerk and town counsel ahead of town meeting.
