Westborough Library Plans Four-Week Closure for Fall Move Into Renovated Building
WESTBOROUGH -- June 24, 2026, Westborough library trustees heard plans for a four-week full closure this fall ahead of the move back into the renovated permanent building, with no formal votes possible for lack of a quorum at the June 24 meeting. Library Director Kate and staff members Caitlin Staples and Karen Mattis presented a four-page transition planning document recommending the closure begin after Labor Day, consistent with Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners guidance calling for a minimum four-week window, two weeks for the physical move and two weeks for staff and systems setup. The director warned that a two-week closure during the earlier move into temporary quarters "was not enough time," with key staff logging roughly 60-hour weeks and setup continuing for weeks after reopening. The central logistical constraint is internet connectivity: the library runs on an independent network, and the moment service activates at the new address through Spectrum and CW Mars, it must shut off at the current location. The building project remains on schedule and on budget for a September 1 certificate of occupancy; the Friends of the Library reported more than $1,700 raised at recent Saturday book sales.
