Trustees OK Trial Food Policy for Library Patrons

Library · Meeting of October 1, 2026

Auburn library trustees approve a trial policy allowing food in designated areas and table a vote on trust fund spending rules. The Board of Trustees voted 6-0 to update its Appropriate Library Use Policy, permitting food at designated tables in the children's room and generally in adult areas, after Director Michael Zeller called food rules "a very contentious issue at every library" and said the change is explicitly "a trial." Trustees also heard that September drew 8,307 visitors and 66 programs with 1,373 attendees, and that the library is budgeting for asbestos remediation, new carpet and shelving that could close the building two to three weeks. Trustees Matt Toth and Vera Corrine agreed to revise draft bylaw language on the roughly $121,000 Norma Card Trust and several smaller named trusts before the board votes on it.

The library's Halloween event is set for October 29 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
