Shrewsbury Planning Board continues Chase Bank hearing, closes Route 20 commercial case

SHREWSBURY — April 2, 2026 — Shrewsbury Planning Board continues Chase Bank hearing amid abutter concerns, closes Route 20 commercial case. The board voted unanimously at its April 2 meeting to continue a new public hearing on a proposed 2,883-square-foot Chase Bank at the Boston Turnpike plaza to May 7, after abutter Paul Brough of JP Fadul Company at 115 Boston Turnpike raised concerns about a corrected stormwater plan — whose error would have routed additional drainage toward his basement — an unpermitted underground holding tank of uncertain location, and a request to limit construction hours to 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays given a residential apartment in his building just 17.5 feet from the new structure. The board separately closed the hearing for a two-building commercial project at 223 Hartford Turnpike after the applicant confirmed MassDOT requires no new curb cut permit and submitted truck turning analyses for emergency vehicles and a WB-40. At the 335 Maple Avenue mixed-use project — the evening's largest item — traffic consultant Bob Michaud of MDM Transportation Consultants told the board the combined development would add roughly 200 directional trips per hour at peak, with all studied Route 9 intersections remaining at level of service D or better, calling the neighborhood impact "de minimis"; residents of Oak Street challenged that finding, citing 30-minute school-dismissal backups and winter road conditions, and board member Steve said flatly the residential and commercial components of the project are "not connected."
