School Committee Adopts Policy Limiting Police on Campus
School Committee · Meeting of September 23, 2026
Shrewsbury School Committee bars civil immigration arrests from school grounds. Members voted unanimously to adopt Policy 637, the PROTECT Act policy, restricting civil law enforcement, including federal immigration enforcement, during the school day and school events absent a judicial warrant. Chairperson Rachel Shreveport said the policy ensures "every student" has "access to a safe and welcoming public education." The committee also heard that 104 staff were hired this year, 54 percent through internal promotion, and that the district's $7,033,752 transportation budget keeps the per-student bus fee at $300.
An annual bullying report showed 43 allegations and 18 confirmed cases last year, continuing a three-year downward trend, with zero confirmed cases at the high school despite 11 allegations. The committee also approved a new "Beyond the Bell" after-school program at Sherwood Middle School and appointed senior Tasia Mamandala as student representative to the town's Master Plan Steering Committee.
