Rutland Select Board Reaches Consensus Against Fall Override, Plans May 2027 Ballot

Rutland Select Board agrees to skip a fall override election and target the May 2027 ballot for a Proposition 2.5 question. Meeting on July 6, the five-member board reached consensus during a lengthy item-six deliberation that a fall attempt, now the earliest possible in late September or October, would likely fail and create a damaging cycle given that a larger fiscal year 2028 override question would follow only months later. Chair Sheila Dibb said the board's position is "we don't do anything in the fall, but the spring, our next spring election in May, we have an override," and proposed putting the FY28 override on every future agenda as well as putting out a community survey at the next meeting to gauge resident priorities.

Member Harry Sechman said the roughly 2,000 voters who rejected the spring override had spoken clearly: "We had several hundred people who said they wanted to put it on the ballot. We did that. Then we had almost a couple thousand people who said, we don't want it." The board also approved two year-end FY26 transfers totaling $23,616.82 — including a $20,000 draw from a health insurance surplus to cover a dispatch wages deficit — and unanimously approved a revamped townline welcome sign lottery program giving priority to Rutland-based businesses.
