Rutland Finance Committee approves more than $180,000 in end-of-year transfers and warns a new override is unavoidable. The committee voted June 25 to cover deficits across snow and ice accounts, town counsel legal fees, and miscellaneous line items, with the most contested action a 4-2 approval of a $64,000 transfer from the town planner salary line to KP Law legal services, after the firm billed approximately $37,000 over the original $40,000 to $45,000 budget, driven by Wachusett Milow Road litigation, dispatch labor disputes, and override-related legal counsel. Members Lynn Wiinikka and Carol Benoit voted against, preferring to route labor-council costs through a separate $360,000 stabilization appropriation so the operating-budget transfer would roll to free cash.

Chair Darren Ross said the town is already between $1.2 million and $1.6 million in structural deficit entering FY27, with a potential $3 million to $4 million override on the horizon: "We're definitely going to need an override again — it's just a matter of how big it's going to be." The committee meets next on July 9, 2026, to reorganize.
