Northborough Schools Propose $63.5 Million Budget With 7 Percent Increase

Northborough school superintendent presents $63.5 million combined budget with cuts already built in. Superintendent Greg Martineau addressed Town Meeting members in a recorded presentation, outlining a $32,076,841 pre-K-through-8 budget — a 6.96 percent increase — and a $31,416,287 regional budget for grades 9-12 at Algonquin Regional High School, a 5.81 percent increase. Martineau said both districts made more than $2 million in reductions each before the proposals reached voters, cutting a combined 12.9 full-time equivalent positions.

Special education costs account for roughly 58 percent of the pre-K-8 increase, and health insurance for the regional district is rising 12.4 percent. Northborough's total regional assessment, including capital and debt, rises $1,221,227, or 7.68 percent, partially offset by $675,000 in reserve funds. "Much of the increase is driven by factors outside the district's control," Martineau said.
