Milford School Committee Sends E-Bike Ban to Policy Subcommittee for Draft

Milford School Committee moves toward an e-bike ban after police report 125 incidents and 12 serious injuries since January 2025. Police Chief Decino told the committee Thursday that groups of up to 30 young riders are traveling the wrong way on Central Street and Main Street on modified bikes capable of motorcycle speeds, with roughly 90 percent of incidents occurring in the hour after school and the problem concentrated at the junior high level. Decino recommended barring students below high school age from bringing e-bikes onto school property, telling members, "They're making themselves a projectile missile." The committee directed Superintendent Craig to bring a draft policy to the May 7 meeting.

On other business, the committee unanimously approved the 2026-27 school calendar — first day for students August 26 — and a new public-gifts policy requiring committee approval for donations above $1,500, while a proposed policy that would have let administrators serve as coaches drew no motion and died without a vote. The consent agenda covering 10 warrants totaling $933,920.43 was also approved unanimously.
