Mendon Library Trustees moved to restart their rectory building subcommittee with an explicit fundraising charge at their June 17 meeting. Five trustees were present after Gay, Lee, and Sean sent regrets. The board recapped a joint meeting held the prior week with the Select Board and Council on Aging, at which a proposal to convert the rectory into a cafe space was effectively set aside, members noting that no operator would invest in a three-year lease horizon and that any capital expenditure would require a Special Town Meeting no sooner than November.
One trustee reported that the Council on Aging asked point-blank whether the library wanted the seniors co-located in a new building, receiving an open but noncommittal answer. The board discussed naming-rights fundraising for the future building, estimating 10 to 11 spaces at $10,000 each for a potential $100,000, alongside Community Preservation Act funds and a Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners grant cycle opening in 2027 to 2028. The board also began a long-deferred discussion of a spending policy for its state aid reserve, currently holding between $80,000 and $85,000 and receiving roughly $14,000 to $16,000 annually, with the Select Board having repeatedly asked what the funds are for.
