Mendon Board of Health awards scholarship, extends solid waste contract with El Harvey

Mendon Board of Health selects Nipmuc senior Tyler Cavallo as annual scholarship recipient and extends its El Harvey solid waste contract for another year. The board voted two to one to award the scholarship to Cavallo, of 26 Bellingham Street, who ranked third in his class of 114 and plans to major in biology at UConn or UMass Amherst; Health Administrator Jack McLellan said the board had received nine applications and described the selection as the most competitive in recent memory. On the Harrington Street noise complaint, state DEP noise specialist Michelle Delmar declined a board request for additional testing, and the driving school confirmed it will end Saturday classes within 30 to 45 days and is enforcing a 4 p.m. hard stop.

Vice Chairman Tom Fichtner said he intends to propose a personal data-logging effort to gather a broader set of noise measurements, and Chair Alan Greenberg said the methodology must first be presented publicly and reviewed by town counsel. The board also voted unanimously to authorize Greenberg to sign the El Harvey contract extension and posted a 7 a.m. curbside reminder on the town website amid pickup delays caused by Route 16 construction.
