West Brookfield Finance Committee warned a failed override would trigger cuts across every department. Members recapped a Monday information session where resident Scott Kahn criticized town leaders, and said the town's required school contribution rose $302,000 this year. A hoped-for regionalization deal with North Brookfield collapsed after what one member called a consultant who "misrepresented the figures" to that town's voters.
Members noted roughly 236 houses on private roads could lose fire and rescue response if the override fails, and one resident complained taxes would rise "$1,000 a year." Another member countered the town remains "4% under every other town around us." The school committee needs four of six votes to close the elementary school, with one member recused over a spousal conflict. The panel took no votes on the budget, only approving April 15 minutes and adjourning.
