Douglas Historical Commission Votes to Advance Mill-Era Properties Narrative

DOUGLAS — February 11, 2026 — Douglas Historical Commission approves annual report, debates how to tell the town's mill-town story. The five-member commission voted unanimously at its February 11 meeting to submit the annual report to Town Hall and to approve December minutes, then spent the bulk of the session working through how to organize a forthcoming historic properties narrative covering more than 80 significant parcels. Members agreed the document should be framed around Douglas's successive mill eras — the Douglas Axe Manufacturing Company, followed by Hayward and then Schuster — with purpose-based subcategories for worker housing, family housing, and actual mill structures, and a separate section for properties outside the mill story such as Bowen Court and Main Street landmarks. Member Dawn Fontaine agreed to draft the monuments and cemeteries section. Member Rebecca Doyen-Lavalli flagged that two Pine Grove Cemetery gravestones long recorded as 1812 are actually 1842, and the commission agreed to contact the Massachusetts Cemetery Association for guidance on correcting official records. Member Scott Garland reported attending a January 24 regional meeting of roughly 13 historical commissions coordinating 250th anniversary programming, including a "witness houses" tour initiative and a uniform signage program marking homes of documented Revolutionary War soldiers. The commission's next meeting is tentatively set for Wednesday, April 29, at 5:30 p.m.
