Other Committee · Meeting of June 16, 2026
Worcester's Accessibility Advisory Commission heard updates on accessible voting, a federal web-compliance mandate, and ADA anniversary event planning at its June 16 meeting. Associate Commissioner Kate McGrath reported that last year's Out to Lunch Disability Pride event drew at least 1,345 attendees, the second-highest turnout in the 10-week series, and outlined plans for this year's 36th ADA anniversary celebration on July 15 on Worcester Common, with confirmed speakers including Senator Robin Kennedy, Mayor Petty, and City Councilor Rob Bellotta. Staff member Patricia warned that a Department of Justice ruling requiring WCAG 2.2 web-accessibility compliance across all public-facing city websites and documents represents an "enormous undertaking" with substantial ongoing cloud-storage and software costs that have yet to be quantified.
The city recently removed a commercial accessibility overlay from its websites after analysis concluded the tool was harmful to users with disabilities. The commission also welcomed new staff member Justo Soto, a Worcester resident and attorney with a background in housing accommodations and disability services, and voted 4-0 to adjourn at 5:23 p.m.
