Turf field assessment finds structural issues, bleachers may close

Lunenburg school officials reported that a structural assessment of the Middle High School track and turf field found issues significant enough that the field remains fenced off, with bleachers likely to close next year.

LUNENBURG --

HIGH SCHOOL -- The Lunenburg School Committee said at its Oct. 21 meeting that "an assessment done last week about the structural integrity" of the turf field and track has been completed, and that "the fence at the field is currently" up around the area. The committee also said "it's likely that the bleachers next year will have to be closed," adding that other town boards have separately discussed "the necessity of bleachers at the football fields." The prior week's Special Town Meeting warrant article seeking roughly $195,830 for engineering work on the track and turf field has advanced: the Select Board voted Oct. 20 to add the school department's warrant article, which the chair said will appear as "Article 9 out of 9" on the November warrant. The Special Town Meeting is set for Tuesday, Nov. 17, at 7 p.m. in the Middle High School Auditorium.

Separately, the School Committee voted to accept a donation "for athletics, for jerseys, for the unified basketball team" from Sherry Cordella, with a member noting the district had previously covered T-shirts but not full uniforms for the team.

The committee also thanked volunteers, class advisors and students for this year's homecoming, with the superintendent noting "our athletes prepare for the game" and "our marching band spends hours rehearsing" as part of the weekend's events.
