BROOKFIELD — The Brookfield Select Board set the town's annual town meeting for June 4, 2026, while tabling a budget dispute over highway department staffing. Select Board Chair Sarah Campbell and member Beth L. Coughlin, who joined by video, discussed cutting the highway administrative assistant's hours to seven and a quarter a week to stay within budget, versus funding her at 16 hours for roughly $4,000 more. Coughlin said Highway Superintendent Kyle needs the extra support "to focus on being a working highway superintendent." Campbell said she saw "both sides" of the issue but called the reduced hours "really nothing." The board took no vote on the hours question, deferring to absent Vice Chair Richard A. Chaffee.
Members also appointed Donna Killam to the Council on Aging, Donald Klaus to the Historical Commission and Jessica Smith to the Cultural Council, and opened the town meeting warrant for article submissions.
