Other Committee · Meeting of August 31, 2026
Worcester's Traffic and Parking Committee filed a wave of crosswalk and beacon requests on Park Avenue and Gold Star Boulevard, finding no quick safety fix for either corridor. Commissioner Stephen Raleigh said Park Avenue carries 19,000 vehicles a day with roughly 3,000 traveling over 34 miles per hour, and warned a flashing beacon alone "isn't going to improve the safety" of Gold Star Boulevard's four-lane crossings. The committee did approve a one-way conversion of lower Gage Street, citing seven crashes in five years, and removed a metered parking space at 25 Harvard Street for commercial tenants.
A Thorn Street one-way proposal was held to September after St. Francis Adult Day Health's Maggie Grogan backed it and resident Diane Stanley Cheruzik warned "it's going to be a nightmare." Raleigh said Park Avenue and Pleasant Street, with 90 crashes in five years, will be studied under an 18-month state "bottleneck grant."
