Millbury Launches Digital Literacy Program for Seniors
MILLBURY — Millbury is rolling out new ways for residents to get comfortable with technology this month, with the town promoting a free online learning platform for seniors and the public library adding weekend tech help and AI workshops.
TOWN HALL
The town announced a new partnership with GetSetUp, an online platform that lets Millbury seniors take live and on-demand classes alongside other older adults to build digital literacy skills, according to a News Flash posted on the town website. The program is aimed at residents who want help navigating smartphones, apps and other everyday technology.
The town also continues to flag drought conditions regionally. As of August 7, Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Rebecca Tepper kept the Central Region, which includes Millbury, at a significant drought level, the town's News Flash feed shows.
SCHOOLS
Millbury Public Schools has turned on its lunch menus for the new school year and is offering school tours ahead of the first day back, according to the district website. Shaw Elementary has also posted its back-to-school resource list, covering summer reading and math packets, supply lists and teacher wish lists by grade.
COMMUNITY & ARTS
The Millbury Public Library has added "Digital Navigators" on-site at set times this month to help patrons who feel overwhelmed by technology, from smartphone basics to printing and downloading e-books. New for August, the library is running Saturday drop-in tech help along with workshops on artificial intelligence, Microsoft Office and other tools, including Tuesday sessions in August on how to use and spot AI. The library has also posted a media literacy checklist, developed with NewsGuard, to help patrons identify AI-generated photos by checking hands, ears, backgrounds and lighting for telltale flaws.
COMING UP
Millbury's Farmers Market continues at the Asa Waters Mansion on Thursday, Aug. 20, with local vendors and live entertainment. The library's next AI workshop session is set for Tuesday, Aug. 18, with Saturday drop-in tech help continuing at the library on Aug. 22.
