Millbury Families Count Down to Aug. 19 Ice Cream Social

MILLBURY — Millbury Public Schools families are one week out from the district's Aug. 19 Ice Cream Social, and Shaw Elementary School is rolling out a new program to get its youngest students excited about reading.

Millbury Public Schools announced this week that the countdown is on for the Ice Cream Social, scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 19. Families will gather in the school auditorium for a brief presentation before the treats begin, according to the district's announcement addressed to "Woolie families."

Separately, Shaw Elementary School is introducing the Birthday Book Cart, a new program that lets students pick out a free book to mark their birthday. The district framed the initiative as part of an effort to build a love of reading among Shaw's students.

COMING UP

Millbury's municipal calendar is busy over the next week. The Board of Fire Engineers meets Monday, Aug. 17, followed by the Board of Assessors and the Board of Library Trustees on Tuesday, Aug. 18, and the Conservation Commission on Wednesday, Aug. 19. The Millbury Public Library is also offering an AI workshop session on Tuesday, Aug. 18, part of its August lineup of Saturday drop-in tech help and Tuesday AI sessions. The town's Farmers Market returns to the Asa Waters Mansion on Thursday, Aug. 20, with local vendors and live entertainment.
