Mendon board debates Cemetery Street closure, school override

Mendon Select Board weighs a four-month Cemetery Street closure and a looming school override. More than a dozen residents pressed the board on a Ty and Bond engineering recommendation to fully close the $2 million Providence Street culvert project rather than keep one lane open, an option officials said could add $500,000 to $1 million and risk grant funding. Board member Brian Morford, a retired 25-year Mendon police officer, said "I cannot in good conscience go against all the experts." Separately, Town Administrator Jeremy Stolt said the certified Mendon-Upton Regional School District budget carries a $1.7 million increase for Mendon, warning "the cavalry is not coming from the federal side." The board also unanimously hired Cat Tassone as administrative assistant at $28 an hour and moved the Annual Town Meeting warrant close date to March 24.
