Lunenburg Select Board Puts Mosquito Program Membership to Town Meeting Vote

Lunenburg Select Board and Board of Health hear $91,000 mosquito program case ahead of town meeting vote. The two boards held a joint session Tuesday with Timothy McGlinchey, director of Central Mass Mosquito Control, and Frank Corning, the district's director of operations and biologist, who outlined a full Integrated Pest Management program that in 2025 included cleaning more than 4,500 feet of ditch, servicing roughly 1,475 catch basins, and treating nearly 14.5 acres for mosquito larvae in Lunenburg alone. The Select Board chair said the town faces "a budgetary shortfall of substance" and that the annual assessment — which she put at roughly $91,000 to $100,000 — should be put to residents at town meeting.

A member of the public named Teddy challenged the district's website language on the toxicity of its spray product, Etofenprox, to bees; McGlinchey acknowledged the concern, saying "there should be no confusion about it — Etofenprox is toxic to mosquitoes but also to bees." The board took no position on continued membership.
