Lunenburg Building Design Committee Awaits Survey Before Advancing Town Hall Plans

Lunenburg's Building Design Committee agreed to pause space-planning work until department survey results arrive by June 15. Chair Dave Blatt told the committee at the Monday evening meeting that a Google Docs survey sent to all town department heads this week — delayed by staff illness — will provide fresh square-footage and adjacency data to replace a study now five or six years old. Members debated whether to pursue renovation of the historic Ritter building, redevelopment of the TC Passios site, or a future pivot to Turkey Hill school if that building is vacated through the Massachusetts School Building Authority process, which the school committee plans to enter in April 2027.

Member Laura argued the recent override failure made any debt-exclusion proposal politically untenable for the foreseeable future: "Right now, we are a bare minimum town, and that's what the voters voted for." Member Tony noted the town's master plan had already ranked town administrative space as one of only two realistic debt-excluded priorities over the next decade, alongside Turkey Hill — and that a prior Burns and Taylor study cost the town $182,000 without producing an approved design.
