Hope Cemetery Commission presses gate redesign

Other Committee · Meeting of October 5, 2026

Worcester's Hope Cemetery Commission keeps pushing for a fix to a long-broken gate system. Chairman Kerwitz and Commissioners Idris, Foucher and Lazat voted unanimously, 4-0, on eight procedural items Monday, including filing updated productivity reports showing July and August 2026 revenue of $45,000 and $54,000, up roughly 2 percent year over year despite fewer lot sales. The cemetery's New York Street gate remains non-operational despite a fence company's repair attempts, prompting the city to bring back the system's original designer; staff said "the designer's now on the hook to help us out to get that fixed." Commissioner Lazat said he personally observed summer nighttime activity, including kids "using ATVs and just doing all kinds of things that they shouldn't be," near one cemetery gate, and the board agreed to pull entrance-camera footage and loop in Worcester police.

Staff also plan added weekend coverage for Halloween, which falls on a Saturday this year.
