Finance Committee · Meeting of July 8, 2026

West Brookfield Finance Committee denied two Recreation Department year-end transfer requests, citing a budget freeze. Members rejected a $3,571 request for a beach-maintenance ATV and a separate $735 request for buoys, saying both violated the Select Board's Dec. 9, 2025 freeze on unbudgeted equipment purchases. A town official identified as Theresa said Massachusetts General Law limits year-end transfers to clearing deficits, "not meant for purchasing." One member acknowledged not realizing the freeze applied when she first discussed the request, saying "I probably would have said no" had she known sooner.

The committee separately approved nine routine deficit-clearing transfers, the largest $6,638.37 for legal counsel services, and heard an update from presenter Denise on exploring a charter school for the town's vacant school building, with a partner school's board expected to vote in August.
