East Brookfield Select Board Votes to Bid Downtown Complete Streets Project

EAST BROOKFIELD — June 8, 2026 — East Brookfield Select Board authorizes downtown streetscape bidding and rural road work using Chapter 90 funds. The board voted unanimously Monday to send the town's Complete Streets grant project out to bid, covering sidewalk, curbing, and accessible crosswalk reconstruction on Mechanic Street, Pleasant Street, Depot Street, and Depot Square. Engineers estimate the full scope at $629,000 against a $500,000 state grant award, and the board confirmed it will draw on the town's Chapter 90 balance — projected above $1.1 million once fiscal year 2027 funds are added — to cover any gap before a contract can be signed. The board also voted unanimously to authorize Chapter 90 spending on Young Road, Draper Road, and West Sturbridge Road. Separately, the board reached consensus to restore a single yard hydrant at the town cemetery's meter pit by June 10, after brittle aging pipe left the facility without water all spring, deferring a decision on full infrastructure replacement — estimated at $200,000 to $600,000 — to a future joint session with the Cemetery Commission.
