Douglas Heritage Committee Reorganizes, Sets May 26 Memorial Day Parade in Motion

DOUGLAS — April 30, 2026 — Douglas Heritage and Honor Committee reorganizes leadership and advances Memorial Day parade plans. The committee voted unanimously Thursday to seat a new Chair and Vice Chair following the resignation of its previous chair, identified only as Alyssa, then spent the bulk of the April 30 meeting finalizing logistics for a Memorial Day parade set to step off May 26 at 11 a.m. from GBI on West Street. A law enforcement official identified as Aaron outlined a traffic management plan calling for the closure of West Street once the parade begins, with westbound detours via Depot Street, and flagged an active road construction project scheduled to lay asphalt binder on Depot Street around May 11 as a variable to monitor. Confirmed participants include five horses and riders, Pack 316 Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Troop 134, the Douglas High School marching band, a Daughters of the Revolution float, two landscaping company floats, and two fire trucks — a total the committee estimated at well over 100 people. The committee set May 14 as the hard deadline for participation confirmations and said it hopes to hold a final all-hands logistics meeting on May 21, the last scheduled meeting before the parade. Sponsorship donations are approaching $4,000, and the committee's most urgent open item remains securing a member of the clergy for the remembrance service at the monument.
