Mendon Select Board Advances $27.7 Million Budget With Override and Stabilization Plan

Select Board · Meeting of April 30, 2026

Mendon Select Board approves election warrant and previews $27.7 million FY2027 budget with override question. At a special April 30 meeting, the board authorized the annual town election warrant placing a $1.1 million Proposition 2 1/2 override question before voters on May 19, with town meeting scheduled for May 12 at Miscoe Middle School. Town Administrator Jeremy outlined a three-motion budget structure: a base general fund of roughly $26.1 million, a $564,402.62 stabilization fund draw requiring a two-thirds vote to boost the school appropriation, and a contingent $27.759 million budget that takes effect only if the override passes.

A 21 percent increase in the Mendon-Upton Regional School District assessment — driven by a 32 percent health insurance spike, a 6 percent salary increase, and a 25 percent rise in out-of-district special education costs — accounts for the bulk of the $3.2 million year-over-year increase. Finance Committee Chair Mike Krager, of 16 Colonial Drive, told the meeting "the school is part of the town" and emphasized that all departments were asked to reduce initial requests, with combined savings of roughly $400,000 from original submissions. For the average Mendon home assessed at $664,496, a successful override would add $452 annually.
