Douglas Heritage Committee Plans Expanded July 4 Parade Route Through Main Street

DOUGLAS — May 28, 2026 — Douglas Heritage and Honor Committee plots bigger July 4 parade after a successful Memorial Day debut. Meeting May 28, the committee debriefed on a Memorial Day parade that drew larger crowds than organizers expected — one member said turnout surpassed any pre-COVID Memorial Day parade in recent memory — and turned immediately to planning a Fourth of July parade tied to the national 250th anniversary that could be "double the size." The preferred route runs from GBI staging on West Street through Main Street, Cook Street, and East Street to Soldiers Field, though concerns about the Mechanic Street bridge's geometry and weight rating for larger vehicles remain unresolved. Key logistics changes include routing the GBI lower lot strictly for drop-off traffic using barrels, staging floats and fire trucks on the street, staggering participant arrival windows, and reserving expanded handicap-accessible parking along the Soldiers Field fence line. A traffic coordinator identified as Aaron said he would pursue DCR electronic signboards and coordination with Webster's highway department to divert tractor-trailers before they enter town, describing the approach as keeping frustrated drivers "moving" rather than stationary.
