Douglas Heritage and Honor Committee locks in Memorial Day parade route and ceremony plan

DOUGLAS — May 21, 2026 — Douglas revives its Memorial Day parade Saturday after years of dormancy, with a route from GBI's West Street parking lot to the municipal center common along Depot Street. The Douglas Heritage and Honor Committee finalized traffic and ceremony plans at its May 21 meeting, with a police official confirming road closures beginning at approximately 10:45 a.m. and a revised plan routing all foot marchers onto the municipal center front lawn to avoid a construction-disrupted stretch of Depot Street. Boy Scout Troop 134 will serve as color guard, the town band of roughly 20 members will play the national anthem and taps at both the West Street monument and the municipal center ceremony, and five horses and cattle are expected in the lineup. Select Board Chairman Les Stevens is sponsoring the first 75 hamburgers from a Smash Burger food truck in the post-parade lot. A dispute over lineup placement prompted one reenactor to announce he would march in a Connecticut Sons of the American Revolution parade instead.
