Council on Aging · Meeting of October 7, 2026
Douglas Council on Aging prepared for an expanded state heating assistance program as seniors center traffic hit record highs. The board approved minutes from its April 29, 2026 meeting and heard that the center logged 6,423 visits since January, including 95 new visitors, and hit its "lucky 5,000" milestone a month early, in the first week of August. Staff said a proposed state change could extend heating aid eligibility to households earning roughly $70,000 a year, prompting a shift to appointment-only fuel-assistance scheduling.
The center's Oktoberfest chili cook-off and yard sale raised about $500, while its transportation van shuttled festivalgoers from St. Matthias to Soldier's Field for a third straight year. Chair Patrick Blake volunteered to help plan the center's 50th anniversary celebration, set for next September.
The board set its next meeting for November 18 at 9 a.m.
