Cultural Council votes to hire youth corps for 250th event

Cultural Council · Meeting of April 29, 2026

Mendon Cultural Council locks in plans for an August 2 mock Declaration of Independence signing marking the 250th anniversary. Chair Joanne Lamothe and member Karen Meade, joined by representatives of the Lions Club and the local fraternal group known as the Brothers, voted by show of hands to hire the Middlesex 4-H Youth Fife and Drum Corps for $1,000 over an adult ensemble quoted at $1,500. Organizers are recruiting 56 residents 18 and older to sign a replica scroll, 27 had signed up, alongside a 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. historic trolley tour and a free 6:30 p.m. concert by the Blackstone Valley Community Band.

"Unfortunately, we do not have the money for fireworks," organizers said, instead asking the Brothers for $1,000 toward decorating Town Hall.
