BROOKFIELD — The Brookfield Board of Health named member Christina chair for the next two months after outgoing chair Maureen said rising duties and unresolved conflict-of-interest concerns prompted her to step aside. The board also adopted its amended tobacco retailer regulation and voted to mail Brookfield tobacco sellers a letter on FDA marketing-denial orders for certain vapes and nicotine products, effective around March 13. Tobacco agent Kathleen DeFore reported Feb. 10 youth compliance checks found no tobacco sales to minors at any Brookfield retailer.
A presenter identified as Judy told the board Massachusetts received $162 million in 2026 federal rural health funding and that UMass had expanded its nine-town pilot cluster to include Brookfield. Members also clashed over whether to rehire contractor Mackenzie instead of relying on the Leicester Regional Public Health Coalition, with Christina saying "businesses are getting upset," and tabled a dispute over roughly $14,000 to $15,000 owed to Leicester.
