Berlin Conservation Commission Cancels Two Summer Meetings, Eyes Rail Trail Grant

BERLIN — June 17, 2026 — Berlin Conservation Commission cancels two summer meetings and signals stalled land acquisition. The commission voted unanimously at its June 17 meeting to cancel both its July 1 and August 5 sessions — the first for anticipated quorum issues, the second because Chair AJ will be out of town. In the evening's most substantive item, AJ reported that Sudbury Valley Trustees contact Laura Matai could not secure a standard appraisal of the Roseberry and Ayers conservation property after two appraisers declined to value the parcel based on speculative development scenarios involving a complicated farm right-of-way across a rail corridor; landowner Lucille Ayers said she needed "a day or two" to reconsider her price expectations. A $1,500 appraisal appropriation is expected to lapse at fiscal year end June 30. The commission also approved $489 in MACC dues, $296.58 to the Berlin Public Library for Story Walk laminator supplies, a $139.45 fence hardware reimbursement, and a $65 staff training fee, and said a MassTrails grant award for the Berlin rail trail Section 1 is expected imminently, with funds available July 1.
