ROYALSTON — The Phinehas S. Newton Library kicked off a new three-part series of free Canva graphic design classes this week and added a metal detector and a large cooler to its Library of Things lending collection.

COMMUNITY & ARTS

The library began offering classes on Canva, a free online graphic design platform, with the first of three sessions held September 17. Instructor Gina Verrelli is teaching residents to build a brochure while learning the platform, with two more sessions scheduled for October 22 and November 19, each starting at 6:30 p.m. at the library. The classes are funded through the Municipal Digital Equity Implementation Program via the Mass Broadband Initiative. Space is limited and registration is required for each session; those who complete a class may sign up for a later one if space remains.

The library also grew its Library of Things collection this summer with two new items: a Minelab metal detector and a large cooler, both available for weeklong checkout. The metal detector is designated a specialty item and can only be borrowed by someone 18 or older, or by a minor with a parent or guardian's signed release form.
