BERLIN — The Berlin-Boylston Regional School Committee approved school improvement plans and the superintendent's annual goals, both unanimously, after a lengthy review of MCAS data showing elementary scores falling behind the state. Superintendent Brent Conway reported Tahanto Regional High School met 78 percent of its state targets, ranking in the 94th percentile, while Berlin Memorial School met just 44 percent, placing in the 77th percentile. Member Meagan Grill asked "what is happening at the elementary schools," and Chair Michael Totman said "we expect kids that go through our schools to at least meet the basic level in a grade." Conway cited a new math curriculum and a planned literacy overhaul funded through a PRISM grant.
The committee also discussed a possible Boylston-Leicester vocational education agreement, with per-pupil costs of $22,000 at Assabet Valley versus $16,500 at Leicester, and entered executive session on a litigation matter by a 5-0 roll call.
