Board of Health Keeps Septic, Well-Test Rules Unchanged
Board of Health · Meeting of September 22, 2026
Mendon Board of Health holds firm on septic and well-test rules, weighs cutting the senior trash discount. Health Administrator Jack McLellan told the board the fiscal year 2027 curbside trash program will cost $703,250, covered entirely by subscriber fees through the town's enterprise account, against $710,622 in projected collections. Members kept the two-compartment septic tank standard and full-panel private well-testing rules for property sales unchanged; Vice Chairman Tom Fichtner said of the well testing, "I would not want to change it." McLellan floated a roughly $35 trash-account "reinstatement fee" after 215 subscribers missed this year's payment deadline, and proposed shrinking the senior discount from four-person to two- or three-person households as senior accounts grow up to 59 percent in some categories.
No votes were taken; the board must submit its preferences by the end of October. Health Agent Colleen Strapponi reported six human West Nile virus cases and zero Eastern equine encephalitis cases statewide this season, out of 7,200 mosquito samples tested.
